(KTNC) - The Nemaha NRD Board of Directors has approved land rights agreements needed to allow work to begin on a dam on Wilson Creek near Dunbar.
The package approved last week includes a cash payment to help mitigate the loss of 115 black walnut trees and other temporary losses of crop and pastureland.
The Nemaha NRD will also help to remove sediment from the reservoir, install an aerator to allow fish to survive during the project, and provide livestock water if needed during construction. The part of a county road that will serve as a construction access route will also be upgraded at the conclusion of the project.
It became necessary to upgrade the structure after Highway 2 was relocated. That resulted in changing the structure’s status to high-hazard.
The Nemaha NRD staff has also secured a preliminary agreement with a landowner near the Buck Creek project to provide property needed to mitigate the impacts of the Buck Creek stream. The board approved an agreement offering $27,000 in total compensation.
The NRD Board approved two contracts for repair jobs on watershed dams. TORCO Enterprises of LaVista was the low bidder on a project that includes structures on Spring Creek northeast of Tecumseh and Wilson Creek near Lorton. Their bid of $62,212 was the lowest of five bids received for the project. Kuhl Trenching and Excavating of Tecumseh was awarded the contract for a similar project on the Upper Little Nemaha near Palmyra at a cost of $29,497. Those projects should be completed this fall.
And the board accepted the bid of $29,265 from Gage County Equipment of Beatrice for a new skid steer loader and attachments.
The NRD Board meetings for November through March will be held at 7:00 p.m., rather than the usual 8:00 p.m. meeting time.
