10/04/2012

( KNZA )--A young Atchison man has been sentenced to 53 months in prison in an officer assault case in Doniphan County, which then led to drug-related charges.

According to Kansas Chief, 19-year-old Antonio Clayter was  sentenced last week in Doniphan County District Court on five charges—including battery on a law enforcement officer, criminal trespass, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana without a tax stamp.

The sentence was handed down after a motion for a new trial was denied.

A Doniphan County jury found Clayter guilty on the charges in August.

Clayter was convicted of assaulting Highland Police officer Arthur Buckingham while he was attempting to arrest him on March 6th in a dorm room on the Highland Community College campus.  Buckingham was hospitalized after suffering a fractured left shoulder.

A co-defendant in the case, 18-year-old Callie Percival of Pawnee City, Nebraska, pleaded “ not guilty” last week to a felony count of obstructing official duty and misdemeanor battery.

A jury trial was set for January 3-4th.
