Meetings Scheduled on Post Office Changes
Meetings are planned this month in several area towns where the U-S Postal Service plans to cut hours at Post Offices to save money. U-S-P-S spokesman Peter Hass says window hours could be reduced to two, four or six hours a day depending on the location. (play audio :12)
The Postal Service originally proposed closing 37-hundred rural post offices around the country to slash costs, but after strong opposition from residents, altered the plan to simply reduce retail hours.
Towns where post office window hours are being cut will host meetings where residents can voice opinions in the next few weeks. Hass says customers will still be able to access many services even though retail hours are being reduced. (play audio :13)
Meetings are scheduled at area post offices, including Crab Orchard at 6:00 p.m. October 9th; Brownville at 5:00 p.m. October 16th; Nemaha at 6:00 p.m. October 18th; and Skidmore, Missouri at 4:00 p.m. on October 17th.
Hass says those who can’t attend a meeting in their communities can still provide feedback. (play audio :09)
The U-S-P-S is searching for ways to cut costs in response to a 25-percent drop in mail volume in the past five years. The move to cut Post Office hours should save a half-billion dollars a year.
