(KNZA)--It's official: golf carts and so called work site utility vehicles could soon be seen on the streets of Horton.
Following numerous meetings spent discussing the issue, Horton City Commissioners on Monday gave approval to the proposal with little discussion.
Police Chief Beau Hasenohr was consulted for his input by the Commission, and while he has no opposition to golf carts, he did voice some concern regarding the higher speeds at which work site utility vehicles can travel.
Commissioner Wade Edwards also spoke, saying he wants to make sure both types of vehicles are used properly(Play Audio)
No further discussion followed, and Commissioner Jeremy Forkenbrock made the motion to approve the ordinance.
Seconded by Edwards, the motion passed unanimously.
Horton business owner Bryan Stirton, who has pushed to the see the small vehicles allowed on city streets, was in attendance for the passage(Play Audio)
Commissioners earlier this summer had voted down the ordinance, but the issue wasn't laid to rest.
Stirton went to work to collect petition signatures and then, joined by others favoring use of the vehicles, appeared before the Commission with a plea to reconsider.
The Commission did just that, as well as allowing the addition of the work site utility vehicles.
Horton residents who own such vehicles won't immediately be able to put them on the street.
The ordinance, drafted by City Attorney Kevin Hill, requires licensing and insurance, as well as other stipulations, including a driving age of at least 18.
Those wishing to operate the vehicles must consult City Hall for the details of what is, and is not, allowable.
