(KTNC) - With colder temperatures on the way, Falls City Utilities is encouraging its natural gas customers to take some simple, low-cost, steps to winterize their homes to save money on heating bills.
Those measures include: Inspect windows and doors for drafts, and applying or replacing caulk to insulate cracks in walls and around doors and windows.
Set your thermostat to the lowest comfortable temperature and dress in layers. Lower the thermostat a few degrees before leaving the house or going to bed. Use a programmable thermostat if possible.
Seal leaks in furnace air ducts and change or clean air filters monthly.
Keep window blinds and shades open during the day to allow sunlight to warm your home, and close blinds at night for added insulation.
You can also set ceiling fans to run clockwise to draw air up and keep warm air circulating, and lower your natural gas water heater to 115 or 120 degrees.
Even with natural gas prices relatively low, Falls City Utility officials say that winterizing your home can still save you money on your natural gas bill this winter.
If you have trouble paying your heating bill, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program – or LI-Heap – may be available to provide assistance. To inquire about the program, call toll-free 866-674-6327. The Department of Health and Human Services runs the LI-Heap program in Nebraska. You can find out more online at www.accessnebraska.ne.gov.
