(KAIR) -- A rural Cummings home is a total loss following a fire early Wednesday morning.
According to Atchison County Undersheriff Larry Myer, dispatchers received the call at 12:10 this morning of a fire at 1801 Osborne Road.
Myer says a sheriff’s deputy and Kansas State Trooper were the first to arrive at the scene and found the lone tenant of the home, Chris Hess outside.
Hess was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, but not transported.
Myer says fire crews from Mount Pleasant and Shannon Townships, and Nortonville fought the blaze until three Wednesday morning.
The Atchison area American Red Cross was on the scene to assist Hess.
Director Kim Bottorff says they will supply Hess with basic needs, as well as rent.
Myer says the cause of the fire to the home owned by Kevin Gering is believed to be caused by lightning.
