( KMZA )--The Nemaha County ( Ks ) Commission has agreed to provide funding to an organization working to prevent alcohol abuse among youth in the county.
Nemaha County United 4 Youth Coordinator Michelle Strube and several others associated with the organization met with commissioners Monday.
Strube told commissioners they didn’t receive the “ Drug Free Communities” federal grant they had applied for. She asked if the commission would still consider giving the organization the 7-thousand dollars in matching funds they promised, even though the grant wasn’t approved.
The commission voted to give the organization the $7,000. They also voted to give the organization a portion of the alcohol sales tax on a quarterly basis.
Sheriff Rich Vernon told commissioners he believes the efforts of the organization has had a good influence in the county.
Following a closed-door session, Sheriff Vernon announced that deputy Kenny Miller has resigned effective September 30th.
Miller has been with the department 6 years. He plans to farm.
The sheriff’s department will be advertising to fill Miller’s position.
