Demolition Approved Around Historic Homes

(KAIR) -- In a short meeting of the Atchison City Commissioners Tuesday afternoon, they unanimously overrode a recommendation by Kansas State Historic Preservation Office to not demolish a condemned home within the vicinity of the historic Hetherington House and Baker House.

Community Development Director Stefanie Leif says they were notified by the Preservation Office in March of their opposition.

Mayor Allen Reavis and Commissioner Rita Hartman explain why they wanted to move forward with the demolition.

Owner Dennis Lowe will now be able to proceed with demolition five days after the preservation office receives notification.

The board also unanimously approved a right-of-way agreement with Northwest Pipe Company on Wallick Road, which separates two of their properties.

Community Development Director Stefanie Leif explains what they plan to do in that area.

Commissioners was also informed that the Community Development office will hold an informational meeting on proposed revisions to scrapping business license regulations Monday evening at 5:30 at City Hall.
