( KNZA )--The Brown County Commission has adopted the 2013 budget as published, which calls for a slight decrease in the property tax levy.
The action followed a hearing Tuesday during which county resident Bill Pollock asked several questions about the budget.
The $9.2 million budget contains an estimated tax rate of 36.189 mills, which will generate 4 ½ million dollars.
The property tax levy is down nearly two-tenths of a mill over this year.
Commissioner Warren Ploeger noted Brown County has the 90th lowest mill levy among the state’s 105 counties.
The commission was able to lower the mill levy due to an increase in the county’s assessed valuation.
CPA Jim Scherer of Hiawatha, who prepared the budget, said the county’s assessed valuation went up $8.7 million from the 2011 budget to the 2013 budget. That means a mill will raise more money.
