(KTNC) - Several locations in southeast Nebraska are included in a listing of places in the state that more people should visit. Heritage Nebraska released its 2012 list of destination places, hidden treasures, and fading places earlier this week.
A statewide call for nominations resulted in scores of entries, with judges selecting 37 historic sites for recognition.
The largest category was hidden treasures, which are historic places considered worthy of greater notice.
Among the hidden treasures are Legion Memorial Park in Auburn; Historic Downtown Beatrice; the Pawnee City Historical Society and Museum; the Great Plains Welsh Heritage Center in Wymore; and Arbor Lodge State Historic Park, Kregel Windmill Factory Museum, and Wildwood Historic Center in Nebraska City.
Six museums and historic places were selected as destination places. Those include Lewis and Clark Country from Rulo to Lynch and all of Nebraska’s State Historical Parks. Destination places are museums and historical sites that serve tourists with high-quality interpretation, services and special events.
The fading places category serves as a reminder of important places that are being lost. In that category, judges recognized the Prague Presbyterian Church representing of Nebraska’s many small rural churches, and the former Bartley High School representing small rural schools.
