USD 430 Ready For Fall Semester
08/20/2012

(KNZA)--The South Brown County Schools, of USD 430, are set to begin the fall semester which arrives on Wednesday.

Horton High School Principal David Norman says they're prepared for the start of the new school year, with plans in place to help incoming, first time student, get acclimated for the semester(Play Audio)

District wide, preliminary enrollment numbers show 541 students will be in attendance; however, it's the hope of District Superintendent Doctor Steve Davies that the finalized number of students will be closer to 597.

Meanwhile, a program that was expected to disappear from the district has returned, with assistance provided to allow “Back Pack Buddies” to remain for the 50 students who benefit from it.

David Davenport is the Chief Executive Officer for the Second Harvest Food Bank in Saint Joseph, Missouri, which oversees the program.

He says they work to ensure all efforts are exhausted before ending “Back Pack Buddies” in any community, and says he's glad a way was found to work with the partners in Horton to ensure that students in need have access to nutritious food(Play Audio)

Join us this coming Wednesday for “More Than Just a Soundbite” as our own Justin Fluke talks in depth with Davenport about the program, used throughout the local area, and how it benefits at-risk students.

We'll do that Wednesday morning at 6:15 and again that afternoon at 1:05.
