(KAIR) -- Discussion continued Tuesday afternoon in the Atchison County Commissioner non-session budget workshop on the role of GIS and funding of a department with a role close to GIS, Information Technology.
Commissioner Mike Bodenhausen asked for justification on the efficiency of technology on the proposal of IT Director Wes Lanter to hire a new full-time IT position.
GIS Tech Tony Redden said the improvement of technology since his arrival a few years ago has saved the county a lot of money.

Redden also credited the increase in technology reporting the lowering of foot traffic to his office to ask questions based off of paper maps.
Lengthy discussion also ensued on consistent salary funding for the amount of time spent on Lanter’s three jobs of Emergency Preparedness Director, Noxious Weed Director and IT Director.
No definite resolution came on proportionizing the wages.
Commissioners also heard further request on a potential increase in courthouse security on docket days Monday, Thursday and Friday, and any jury trials from Sheriff John Calhoon and Tom Weishaar of Court Services of Kansas’ First Judicial District.
Weishaar says there are several reasons for their proposed increase.

They are proposing having two armed officers in the courthouse for the docket days, which would amount to about 20 hours a week.
Commissioners also heard a more detailed proposal from Jason Jenkins of Miami County EMS, offering regionalized ambulance services for the county.
They determined more information was needed from the entities involved before they could move forward.
A reminder, in all budget workshops, no action is taken.
