(KAIR) -- On Monday, a resurfacing project will begin on a 27.3-mile stretch of K-4 starting at the US-24 junction in Shawnee County north to the Jefferson/Atchison County line.
Project work includes a surface recycle of existing pavement, followed by application of a 3/4-inch new asphalt layer over the existing mainline pavement, followed by all new pavement markings.
The resurfacing project will smooth the road and fill surface defects that can shorten pavement life.
Work will take place during daylight hours from 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with some occasional Saturday work, except for the section of K-4 from US-24 to the north city limits of Meriden. Working hours for this K-4 section will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Beginning on Monday, August 13 at 7:00 a.m., eastbound and/or westbound (starting at Valley Falls) will be reduced to one lane each direction along with intermittent closures of adjacent cross roads during the project work hours for resurfacing work.
Traffic will be directed through the project work zone via a pilot car and flagger operation.
There will be a posted speed limit of 55 mph and a 14-foot lane width restriction through the project work zone during working hours.
Drivers should expect delays of up to 15 minutes maximum and are encouraged to use alternate routes, if possible.
Hamm, Inc. & Subsidiaries (Perry, KS) is the primary contractor on this resurfacing project with a total contract cost of $4.360 million.
The scheduled completion date for the entire project is late October 2012, weather permitting.
This project is funded by T-WORKS, the transportation program passed by the Kansas Legislature in May 2010.
