(KAIR) -- A raw water intake pump failure is to blame for the city of Atchison issuing a stage four water rationing alert for its water customers.
The alert came just after nine this morning from Fire Chief Mike McDermed, who is filling in as acting City Manager.
McDermed says the pump went out overnight.

McDermed says after five million gallons of water were reported to have been used Tuesday, preliminary discussions were already in the works to put voluntary restrictions into place prior to the alert.
In the meantime, the water features at the Riverfront Park and on the 400 Block of the Mall will be turned off.
The city says drinking water remains safe through this alert.
Any questions regarding the alert are to be directed to the city office at 367-5500.
