(KTNC) - The Missouri Department of Transportation has selected an artist to paint a mural at the new Rock Port Welcome Center. Matthew Dehaemers of Kansas City, Missouri, has been chosen to design, construct and install the artwork in the interior hallway of the welcome center.
Dehaemers holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Creighton University and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin. He’s won several award for his work, and was chosen as the mural artist for the Interstate 44 Welcome Center at Joplin.
The theme of the new Welcome Center is “Energy Conservation and Alternative Energy Past and Present” and Dehaemers will use that theme as the inspiration for his artwork. The mural will be completed by the end of the year.
The Rock Port Welcome Center is located on Interstate 29 just south of Rock Port. It opened to the public on June 27th, and is open 24-7, with staff from the Missouri Department of Tourism on hand from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
