With the wave of hot and dry weather, and another week of temperatures around 100 degrees with no rain in sight, area farmers are doing all it takes to save their crops and livestock.
Atchison County Extension Agent Ray Ladd says it all started with mild winter for livestock feeders.

He says many producers are green-chopping their crop or chopping it for silage for their cattle later on.
Ladd adds extra practices are being taken to keep cows beefed up.

For crop producers, many parts of the eastern and western Corn Belt are experiencing drought-like conditions.
Crop insurance salesman Jeff Schuele says there are several factors for those with crop insurance, on what their crop insurance minimum revenue guarantee would be.

The federal government then takes average readings from the December corn and November soybean futures in February to set a base price.
If the producer has harvest price option, during the month of October, they then take the futures prices and average them with the close of each day during that month.
Schuele explains what that will do in the fall.

After speaking with some area farmers, most are not very optimistic about this year’s crop yields.
