Responding to several calls they’ve received about the status of the trail, officials with the Nemaha Natural Resources District say the southern portion of the Steamboat Trace Trail remains closed.
The section of the trail from Peru to Brownville was closed last year due to Missouri River flooding. The flooding – from last year and 2010 – has taken a toll on the south section of the trail, and contractors are finally beginning repairs.
It will be a while before the trail is fully open. The trail will remain closed from Peru to Brownville for at least another month while crews work to restore the crushed rock surface. Signs and barricades have been posted at all major trail access points along that section of the trail.
The north half of the trail from Peru to Nebraska City is open. Access is available at the Peru trailhead or at the trailhead located near the OPPD power plant just south of Nebraska City.
For more information about the Steamboat Trace, contact the Nemaha NRD at 402-335-3325, or check their website at www.nemahanrd.org.
