Name of Trooper who Died in Missouri River Flood Added to National Memorial
A Missouri State Patrol Trooper who died during last summer’s flooding in Holt County is being remembered. Trooper Fred Guthrie Junior’s sacrifice was remembered during the National Law Enforcement Memorial Service earlier this month, as his name was added to the Memorial.
Trooper Guthrie and his canine partner, Reed, died after apparently being swept away by fast moving floodwaters. The had been assigned to Missouri River flood duty and were working in the Big Lake area, near the junction of Highways 118 and 111 at the time. The dog’s body was located in the floodwaters last August 2nd. Trooper Guthrie’s body was located on January 12th under four feet of sand and silt near the original search sight.
Guthrie is the 30th Missouri State Patrol member to lose his life in the line of duty. A small contingent of troopers accompanied Guthrie’s family to Washington, D.C. for the memorial service.
Guthrie’s name was one of six Missouri law enforcement officers added to the National Law Enforcement Memorial this year. A total of 362 officers who died in the line of duty nationwide were honored this year; 163 of those officers died in 2011.
