A Jefferson County cattle rancher and small businessman announced his candidacy today ( Monday ) for a seat in the Kansas House of Representatives.
Jeff Hanson, a Democrat, said he is running for a seat in the 47th District "to stand up to Gov. Brownback’s radical policies." He said in a statement announcing his candidacy that "the few dissenting Republican moderates left in Topeka are powerless to stand up to the Brownback administration."
The 47th District includes Jefferson County and a portion of Atchison County.
The position is currently held by Ramon Gonzalez Jr., a Republican from Perry. Gonzalez has filed for election to the position he was appointed to in January 2011 after the resignation of Lee Tafanelli. Tafanelli resigned after being appointed Kansas Adjutant General.
Hanson has operated a cow/calf ranch during his time living in Jefferson County. He also has practiced law in Kansas and Missouri with nearly all of his clients being small businesses, but now calls himself a "semi-retired lawyer." Hanson is also a businessman and entrepreneur who is active in organizing and managing a start-up business manufacturing equipment for food safety and pollution control.
Hanson has two children who received all of their pre-college education at Oskaloosa Public Schools.
