The Johnson-Brock School District is moving ahead with plans to install artificial turf on the football field. The school board voted Monday night to go ahead with the project to replace the current grass field.
Superintendent Jeff Koehler says they hope to break ground on the project before Memorial Day, and lay the new turf by August first or sooner. Koehler says the board felt confident in its decision, which came after much discussion. (play audio :39)
The cost of the turf field is estimated at approximately $250,000. The district will get a grant from the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality to cover a quarter of the cost, since the district will be using a turf made of recycled tires. Koehler says local residents experienced in laying artificial turf have volunteered to help install the new carpet – saving another 50-thousand dollars. Koehler says the district will have to raise an additional $25,000 to fully fund the new turf.
Other summer projects scheduled in the Johnson-Brock School District include replacing window air conditioners in classrooms and the office with quieter, more efficient, units. And, Koehler says they also plan to make improvements to the Distance Learning Room, with some new equipment there. (play audio :18)
In other business this month, the Johnson-Brock School Board approved two overnight trips for students this summer. FBLA students will be attending nationals in San Antonio, and Johnson-Brock students will also attend the National History Day competition in Washington, D.C.
And the board approved updated policies pertaining to the state’s new concussion law and standardized testing.
