Peru State College junior Kesha Beethe from Tecumseh, a sport management and exercise science major has been honored by the Campus Compact as a 2012 Newman Civic Fellow.
The award honors 162 student leaders from 32 states who have demonstrated a personal commitment to find solutions for challenges facing their communities.
Beethe’s civic engagement has focused on the issue of pediatric obesity, examining the public policies that influence nutrition and activity in rural Nebraska. She assisted with implementing Peru State’s Children’s Health Activity and Nutrition Community Engagement Initiative, a partnership with Auburn Elementary School focused on improving children’s health through nutritional exercise.
Beethe has been named to the Dean’s List every semester at Peru State. She is a member of the Alpha Chi honor society, Phi Beta Lambda and was named a 2011 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Scholar Athlete. She has also served as a personal trainer and exercise class instructor for Peru State staff and students.
Beethe also does service work in her hometown of Tecumseh where she instructs water safety for the Girl Scouts, referees little league basketball games, coaches summer softball and does volunteer work at the Tecumseh ballpark in addition to working with local high school athletes developing off-season conditioning and training program.
