Mound City Aldermen received a welcome surprise when they opened bids for the street improvement project last week.
Three bids came in lower than anticipated – which means the city will be able to resurface more streets.
The city received three bids for the street improvement project and awarded the contract to the low bidder, Keller Construction of St. Joseph, with a bid of $314,832.
As the bid was lower than anticipated, the board amended the contract to include paving additional streets, along with the parking lot at the north end of Nebraska Street, and to wedge all streets in the project. The additions bring the total cost for the street repairs to just under $500,000.
Mound City voters overwhelmingly approved a measure to issue $750,000 in general obligation bonds for the street repair project during the April 3rd Municipal election.
In other business, Mound City Aldermen unanimously approved a motion to renew the solid waste contract with Stuart Disposal. R.R. Stuart indicated to the council that there would be no increase in the residential trash rate.
Mayor Krueger and Clerk Patsy Smith noted complaints the city has received from residents about the trash service – including early pickup, no response to phone calls, and the heavy trash truck on newly paved streets.
And the council approved the purchase of a new rotary mower for the Sewer Department. The new machine will be used to mow around the city lagoon, and possibly some nuisance properties in town.
