As the Final Four dominated the headlines, Kansas State University makes some headlines of their own, as they hire their new coach, in former University of Illinois coach, Bruce Weber. Athletic Director, John Currie made a quick and fast strike in the coaching hire field, hiring his first coach while being the AD at Kansas State, after former Wildcat coach, Frank Martin left to accept the head coaching job at the University of South Carolina.
The hire comes amid some scrutiny by Kansas State fans, as they still lament the fact that Frank Martin is no longer the head coach of the Wildcats, but Currie believes Weber provides a great amount of experience to keep the Wildcat program success going, as Kansas State has made the NCAA Tournament four of the last five years.
Weber was fired after this past season with the University of Illinois, after going 17-15, finishing tied for ninth in the Big Ten. Weber spent nine seasons at the helm for the Fighting Illini going 210-101 in those nine seasons, while making a national championship appearance in his second season. After taking over for current University of Kansas head coach, Bill Self, Weber led the Illini squad to the Sweet 16 his first season and then the national championship game in his second season, going 37-2. That year Weber earned himself the coach of the year award.
Fifty-five year-old, Weber, spent five seasons as the head coach before going to Illinois. He lead the Salukis to the NCAA tournament his last two years at the program. Weber as a career record of 313-155 and looks keep the Kansas State program where it as a basketball program.
