All the details aren’t set in stone, but scores of artists will descend on Pawnee City late this spring. Fairbury artist Thom Hunt approached the city council this week, seeking permission to use either the Fairgrounds or Pawnee City Pond as the location for his RAT Campinar.
RAT is an acronym for Rock Carvers, Artists, and Theme Builders.
Hunt operates Big Bamboo Studios in Fairbury and is a well-known concrete sculptor and artist. He told the council that he expects between 150 and 200 artists to come to Pawnee City for the festival May 28th through June 2nd.
The city council suggested Hunt contact the Fairview Golf Society for permission to use the Fairgrounds. City Clerk Tammy Stephens says Pawnee City figures to get some artistic benefit from the camp. (play audio :25)
Among the artists expected at the camp, Stephens says, is one of the top countertop designers in the country – among others – working on various projects during the weeklong event. (play audio :28)
Thom Hunt recently purchased the Carnegie Library Building in Pawnee City. He told the city council that he plans to use the basement as an art school, and open a gallery in the main floor of the historic building.
