Turkey Mating Season Underway

The early arrival of spring also bumped up the breeding season for wild turkeys. Nebraska Game and Parks spokesman Greg Wagner says the birds are on the move now and Nebraskans can expect to see them in the most unusual places.

Wagner says people who live in urban areas shouldn't be surprised if one pops up in their yard. For those who encounter one while on a highway or the interstate system should be on the lookout for these large birds.

Wagner says because turkeys stand their ground drivers may have to pull over and stop to prevent from hitting one or more. They may be curious about your vehicle.

Wagner says toms and jakes do get a bit more aggressive during mating season but there is no need for alarm. They may approach other animals or children because they are at eye level but they are not known to attack.
The turkey mating season is now through May.
