Sterling and Freeman were the team champions at the Pioneer Conference Indoor Track and Field Meet, held Thursday at Doane College in Crete.
Sterling was the girls’ team champion with a total of 87 points; Freeman was second with 77 points, and Nebraska City Lourdes Central, Southern, and Friend rounded out the top five. Falls City Sacred Heart placed sixth with 35 points, Pawnee City was 7th, HTRS 8th, Johnson-Brock 9th, and Diller-Odell 10th.
The boys’ team standings saw Freeman place first with 72.5 points, with Pawnee City second with 65 points. Southern was a close third, with Lourdes Central 4th, Johnson-Brock 5th. Sacred Heart was 6th with 44.5 points, just ahead of Sterling with 42 points. Friend, HTRS, Diller-Odell, and Lewiston rounded out the team standings.
Individually, Johnson-Brock senior Kale Wolken won four events – the 55 and 200 meter dashes, the high jump, and long jump. He was the only multiple winner on the boys’ side. Sacred Heart’s Sean Strasheim and Matt Mullins finished 1-2 in the pole vault.
In the girls’ meet, Ellen Wulf of Lourdes Central (55m dash, 55m hurdles), Jeryn Creek of Southern (200m dash, long jump), and Morgan Lenners of Freeman (800 and 1600 meter runs) all won two events.
