A 22 year old former Atchison High School sports standout will serve jail time for the attempted battery of a man in Lawrence last summer.
Joshua “Pooter” Downing was sentenced to 15 days in Douglas County jail last week in Douglas County District Court on the charge of attempted aggravated battery.
This came after he pled no contest to the charge on March 5th.
Prosecutors accused Downing of swinging at a Lawrence man in the early morning hours of June 30th of last year with intent to strike him in the face in the 500 block of west 19th Street in Lawrence.
According to chief assistant district attorney David Melton, Downing was a passenger in a car that was driving by a group of people walking in the area.
Downing confronted the group of people because he believed they had disrespected him.
Melton said the Lawrence man suffered a head injury and was bleeding and that he has already paid restitution in the case.
District Judge Kay Huff also gave Downing a year of probation as well.
She also allowed him to begin serving his jail sentence June 1st, as he attends Georgetown, Kentucky College, where he is a linebacker on the football team.
KAIR Radio has called the Athletic Director at Georgetown College, awaiting word on if there will be any discipline handed down as a result of the conviction.
