Seven of 10 Missourians killed in crashes are not wearing seat belts. The Northwest Region Coalition for Roadway Safety is encouraging teenagers to take a couple of extra seconds to buckle up and win some great prizes for doing so.
In the last three years, 254 teens were killed in Missouri traffic crashes, and 75 percent of them were not wearing seat belts.
The Show Me Your Seat Belt contest is going on through March 31st. Teenagers just need to have someone take their photo wearing their seat belt and enter it online in the contest. Winners will be picked from all of the photo entries received.
Teams of seat belt spotters also will be out at local high schools checking for actual seatbelt usage. If students are buckled up, they can win.
To find the rules, prizes and enter the contest go to saveMOlives.com. Missouri law enforcement officials are cracking down on unbelted drivers through March 31st. Under the Graduated Driver License Law, teens are required to wear their seat belt and it'’ a primary offense meaning they can be pulled over solely for not wearing their seat belt.
