The Wetmore Cardinals came into the semifinal game in search of punching their ticket to the championship game in the Class 1A-Division II state tourney, but it would be continued struggles from the floor shooting wise in today's semifinal. The Cardinals down most of the contest to the six seed Sharon Springs-Wallace County Wildcats would fight to tie it at the end of regulation forcing overtime and then tying the game in the last seconds of overtime, also. But it would be a foul call with less than one second left that sent senior, Hayley Pletcher to the free throw line to winning the game, she would miss the first, then make the second for the 46-45 win in overtime over Wetmore.
Wallace County lead it 13-4 after the first quarter, but Wetmore would cut that lead to five going into the half. The Cardinals would outscored the Wildcats in the second half by five to tie the ball game at the end of regulation on a three-point basket, forcing overtime. In overtime it was back and forth between the two squads with Wallace County having a three-point with seconds to go, when senior, Kelsey Henry hit a three-pointer to tie the ball game. Then it was heartbreak as Wallace County tired to move the ball up the floor with a few seconds left and Pletcher was fouled, sending her to the charity strip for two free throws only needing one to win the game and she delivered hitting the second free throw.
Only four players scored in the game for the Wetmore Cardinals, with seniors, Henry and Nichole Boden leading the way. Henry finished the day with 16 points, while Nichole Boden tallied 21 points in the loss. The shooting woes as a team continued as Wetmore shot 35.7% from the floor and only 3-14 from three-point land. For the Wallace County Wildcats Pletcher lead the way with 18 points and Hallie Kuhlman added 12 points in the game.
Wetmore is 22-3 now on the season with the heartbreaking loss, but look to regroup and take home 3rd place at the state tourney as they will play at noon in the third place game of the Class 1A-Division II State Tourney; the broadcast will be on 92.1 KMZA pregame starting about 10 minutes before the tip at noon.
