Two cases of whooping cough have been confirmed in Nemaha County.
That word today ( Tuesday ) from Nemaha County Community Health Services Director Jane Sunderland. Sunderland says both cases are in the Centralia area.
Pertussis, commonly referred to as whooping cough, is a highly contagious respiratory disease.
Sunderland says the early symptoms of pertussis often begin like a cold, with a runny nose, sneezing, fever and cough...( play audio )
Pertussis can occur at any age, but is most common in children less than one year of age.
In younger children it can lead to complications including pneumonia, inflammation of the brain and in rare cases death.

What this article fails to state is that at least one of the two confirmed cases is of a school aged child. Please encourage your children to wash their hands often or use hand sanitizer and to cover their coughs. This illness is passed through respiratory droplets.

There are now 3 confirmed cases in Centralia and 9 total in County. Direct from Nemaha County Health Department.
