Class 1A-Div. II Frankfort sub-state Boy's Semifinals recap and Players to Bank On
Playoff action continues in the state of Kansas, as it's a clean slate for every squad as it's win or go home time. It was the boy's varsity semifinals in the Class 1A-Division II in the Frankfort sub-state, last night, giving two teams a chance to advance onto the sub-state championship game on Saturday. First was the Bern Indians, fresh off their first round win in sub-state taking on the B&B Falcons the number two seed in the sub-state. B&B was able to move on to Saturday with a 57-44 win over Bern. In the second semifinal it was the Axtell Eagles who took down St. Xavier in their first round sub-state matchup going against the Frankfort Wildcats who are the number one seed in the sub-state. Frankfort notched themselves a victory to move on to Saturday, winning 73-38.
Saturday at 7:30pm on 92.1 KMZA it will be the boy's varsity championship in the Class 1A-Division II Frankfort sub-state, featuring the B&B Falcons versus the Frankfort Wildcats.
Bern vs. B&B (Class 1A-Division II Semifinals):
"Player to Bank On:" Eric Huerter (B&B) 19 points
The final score was not indicitive of the battle on the hardwood between these two squads, as it was throughout most of the contest, until the B&B Falcons were able to stretch out the lead in the fourth quarter. It was low scoring first quarter only 9-4 in favor of B&B heading into the second quarter, Bern would take the lead in the second quarter for a time, but it was senior, Eric Huerter who hit a three at that buzzer for the first half ended to give B&B a three-point lead at the half. The lead would be stretched out to six by the Falcons going into the fourth quarter, were they would outscore the Indians by seven to secure the win and advance to the sub-state championship on Saturday.
Three players, tallied double figures on the day for B&B with Huerter leading the way with 19 points, hitting on four treys. Senior, Derek Steinlage and junior, Curtis Stallbaumer chipped in double digits as well, with 13 and 14, respectively. For the Bern Indians it was a struggle as a team from behind the arc as they went 3-19 as a team from three-point land. Junior, Graham Droge did connect on one of his three-pointers and finished the night with 11 points. It was sophomore, Matthew Haverkamp leading the Indians squad again, after scoring 22 points versus Wetmore in the sub-state first round game, he tallied 14 points against B&B.
With the loss Bern finishes the season 11-11, two wins better than last year's total. While B&B with the win advances on in sub-state action the championship game on Saturday; as they are now 16-6 on the season.
Axtell vs. Frankfort (Class 1A-Division II Semifinals):
"Player to Bank On:" Jacob Broxterman (Frankfort) 24 points
In the second semifinal game of the night in the Class 1A-Division II Frankfort sub-state, it was the Frankfort Wildcats taking control of the game early against the Axtell Eagles and never looking back on punching their ticket to the sub-state championship game on Saturday. It was close for the first few minutes then Frankfort ultilized their big men inside especially senior, Jacob Broxterman who scored 11 of his game-high 24 points in the first quarter, giving Frankfort a 21-8 lead at the end of the first stanza. The Wildcats would continue the scoring throughout the night with 10 different players netting at least one point on the night for them. While for the Eagles the offensive struggles stretched throughout the contest as basketball just seemed not to fall, all the while Frankfort was stretching the lead out to unreachable measures.
For Axtell only one player finished with double figures on the night and that was senior, Aaron Schmelzle who tallied 15 points in the loss. Frankfort was able to keep Axtell's second leading score sophomore, Payton Heinen in check on the night, as he only netted four points in the game, as his shot was just not falling throughout the night. On Frankfort's end they only had two players finish with double figures and spread the scoring throughout 10 players. Senior, Jonathan Keating finished with eight points and multiple offensive rebounds, while junior guard, Alex Surdez tallied nine points. Junior guard, Calahan Brown continue to show his prowess on the scoring side of things, to go along with Broxterman's 24 points.
Frankfort with the win advances to the championship game on Saturday and improves their record to 18-5 on the season, also stretching their current winning streak to nine games. While Axtell finishes their season 5-15 with the loss and will return many players next season with a young team this year.
