The Nemaha Natural Resources District Board of Directors is continuing its effort to control encroachment of the plant sericea lespedeza at Kirkman’s Cove Recreation Area.
The NRD has been battling the plant for the past several years, primarily by intensively grazing a 43-acre infested area along with spraying late in the summer.
The NRD Board this month voted to negotiate a grazing contract with the previous tenant, Eldon Snoke, to continue grazing cattle on the area.
The contract will require Snoke to install and maintain fences to contain the cattle. That is to prevent the animals from accessing the creek channel and reservoir. That will also require Snoke to provide water for his cattle since they cannot be allowed to drink from the lake.
