The Nemaha Central Schools Board of Education reviewed bus transportation proposals at the regular monthly meeting this week.
The district currently has contracts with the three contractors who served the prior USD 442 and USD 451 districts.
Durham School Services representatives were present to answer questions regarding their proposal to contract the entire new district. Their base proposal for six home to school routes was $210,846, which is $50,000 less than what the district has been paying the three current contractors total. Kenny Sudbeck and Josh Koch, the other two contractors, have not submitted bids. The Durham proposal includes workers compensation and liability insurance, driver training, drug & alcohol testing, and a local supervisor. The district would be responsible for the cost of fuel as is the current practice.
Supt. Darrel Kohlman also had compiled information for the district to operate the bus transportation in house. Figuring the cost of six buses which could be purchased outright or lease-purchased, he estimated the annual cost to be slightly less than $150,000. The $150,000 figure prorates the cost of the six buses over seven years. The cost of the buses would be charged to the Capital Outlay fund. Not included in this cost or the contractor costs are activity buses and trips.
Board members will look over the information further before making a decision at the March 12 meeting.
In other business, the board adopted the 2012-2013 school calendar.
The first day of school for students will be August 16th and the last day, May 22nd.
