County to Seek Funding for Streambank Project
10/11/2016

(KNZA)--Brown County will seek federal funding assistance for a stream bank stabilization project southeast of Robinson.

The Brown County Commission voted Monday to seek funding through the Natural Resources Conservation Service’s Emergency Watershed Protection Program for the project on the Wolf River.

District Conservationist Matt Sprick told Commissioners that an engineer with the NRCS has evaluated the site along 205th Road and determine its eligible for funding through the program.

The stream bank suffered heavy erosion during a storm on September 13th that brought heavy rainfall and flooding, and Sprick says it poses a public safety hazard because of its close proximity to the road.

He said the program would provide 75 federal funding for the project.  The county would be responsible for the remaining 25 percent, which is estimated not to exceed $30,000.

In other business, the Commission voted to renew the county employee health insurance plan with Blue Cross and Blue Shield, effective January 1st, 2017.  The county will see an 8 percent rate increase.

And the Commission gave representatives of the Brown County Relay for Life approval to use the courthouse square and courthouse for their 2017 Relay for Life event, which is tentatively scheduled for the evening of June 9th.

Organizers hope moving from event from the Hiawatha High School track to  downtown Hiawatha will boost participation.
