The 18th Annual Kansas Cattlemen's Association Convention and Trade Show will take place on October 28th and 29th, 2016 at the Meridian Center in Newton, Kansas. KCA is putting together an event where today's ranch and agriculture community can come together with the state's agribusiness leaders for educational seminars, industry updates, and policy meetings. The convention is designed to bring together independent cattlemen, stockmen, consultants, suppliers, and other individuals interested in exchanging ideas, networking, learning, and collaborating to gain insight about key issues impacting Kansas cattlemen and the cattle industry as a whole.
The convention will kick off at noon, Friday, October 28th with attendee registration and the opening of the trade show. Beginning at 1:00pm will be presentations and the KCA annual membership meeting. The Cattlemen's Beef Board will give a Beef Checkoff update provided by Courtney Kalous, Director of Planning and Evaluation. Later in the afternoon, Dr. Dan Thomson, Kansas State University, will be discussing Fat Cattle Livestock Transportation. The day will wrap up with a BBQ and social hour.
Saturday, October 29th, 2016 is set to be a day full of expert presentations. The day will begin with a meet and greet with Dr. Roger Marshall, Kansas 1st Congressional District Candidate. Dr. Jessica Laurin, TriCounty Veterinary Center will follow the meeting and greet with a status update and review of the Veterinary Feed Directive set to be fully effective on January 1, 2017.
KCA supports the passage of the 21st Century Glass-Steagall Act (S. 1709, HR 3054). Mr. Bob Baker will provide an overview of the bills, an economic update, and will be on-hand throughout the convention to discuss Glass-Steagall and other economic conditions facing the world economic outlook.
Dr. Bill Brown, Kansas Animal Health Commissioner, will discuss and answer questions regarding Foot and Mouth Disease as well as the Statewide Emergency Response Plan. As part of the plan, the Kansas Department of Agriculture will be conducting an emergency preparedness activity in late December to test Kansas response in the event of an animal disease emergency.
Moving to markets, staff from Schwieterman, Inc. will discuss the rise and collapse of the cattle markets. Following lunch, Dr. Tom Noffsinger will provide a Low Stress Cattle Handling seminar. The presentations for the day will wrap up with David Pfrang and Jim Dobbins taking an in-depth look into the Beef Checkoff while discussing redirection of Checkoff assessment.
The Convention will come to a close Saturday evening after the KCA Annual Benefit Auction and Banquet. The McKinney Sisters, Daryl, Randyl, and Mikyl will perform some of their favorite tunes from this popular bluegrass gospel family trio.
