(KAIR)--Nearly $44,000 is received by the Horton Police Department, courtesy of a federal grant award. “It allows us to have state of the art equipment that we would not otherwise have due to having the minimal amount of funds that we have to work with and a small budget,” Horton Police Chief John Calhoon tell MSC News. “I take a little time to apply for these, and it's been worthy thus far. I feel very fortunate that Kansas Criminal Justice Coordinating Council felt that we were in need of it.”
Calhoon says the grant, which comes through the 2017 Federal Edward J. Byrne Memorial Justice Grant Program, will allow his department to enhance emergency communication through an equipment upgrade. “Three years ago, upon me assuming this position [as Police Chief], we had one 800 mobile radio and four 800 portables. Now, we're gonna have all of our radios equipped with 800 mobile radios, as well as every officer will have their own radio...they'll have the radio with them at home at all time.”
Calhoon says the portable radio equipment purchase will work in conjunction with the purchase of new in-car video cameras, wifi body cameras, and microphones, made through last year's grant award of more than $24,000. Also purchased through those funds was a new radar unit and video library system.
