Atchison Man Sentenced To Prison
10/05/2016

(KAIR)--16 months behind bars.

That’s the sentence handed down to one of the men charged in connection with a rash of Atchison burglaries that occurred in May.

22-year-old Devan Newson plead guilty in Atchison County District court to three counts of burglary of a non-dwelling and an unrelated felony possession of marijuana charge.

The burglaries occurred at four different Atchison businesses including: King’s Super Store, All American Pawn, Iron Horse BBQ and Nell Hill’s.

The unrelated drug charge stems from a May 6 arrest when an Atchison County Sheriff Deputy stopped to assist Newson with his broken down vehicle on U.S. Highway 73. The deputy discovered Newson’s license to be suspended and arrested him. That led to the search of Newson’s vehicle where Atchison County Sheriff Jack Laurie says 15 individual packages of marijuana was discovered.

In the drug case, Newson was sentenced to 18 months supervised probation to be served after his prison sentence in the burglary charges.

The second man charged in connection with the same burglary cases, Lansing resident Antonio Clayter, will hear his sentence in Atchison County District Court Oct. 14.
