New County Bridge Opens to Traffic

(KNZA)--A new bridge in northern Brown County has opened to traffic.

Brown County Commissioner Steve Roberts told his fellow Commissioner's at Monday's regular meeting that the bridge on 320th Road, about five miles east of Reserve, is now open although some clean-up work still needs to be done around the structure.

The former truss bridge was replaced with a 95-by-26-foot wide concrete and steel bridge.

Norfolk Construction of Norfolk, Nebraska provided the labor while Husker Steel provided the materials for the nearly $245,000 project.

Meanwhile, a second railroad crossing in the county will be getting new warning devices.

Commissioner Warren Ploeger says the state has agreed to install warning lights and crossing arms at a crossing on 340th Road near the state line, but it could be 13 months before they are installed.

Ploeger said he met last week with Union Pacific and Kansas Department of Transportation officials at the crossing site.

Warning devices have already been approved for a crossing on Antelope Road, north of Sabetha, but Ploeger said he was told that won't happen for another nine months.

Federal funding will pay for 100 percent of the cost of the warning devices at both crossings, with the county responsible for installing advance warning signs.
