(KAIR)--Special honors for an Atchison couple, receiving recognition for years of support, and service, provided to the local Catholic community.
George and Barbara Baumgartner are named as recipients of the Cross of the Order of Saint Benedict from Benedictine College.
The longtime local residents will receive the honor Tuesday morning during the Opening Academic Convocation at 11:00 at the Ralph Nolan Gymnasium, located on the college campus.
According to a press release from the college, the couple has been associated with the Atchison Benedictines for nearly their entire lives.
Among the related accomplishments credited to George Baumgartner are his years of teaching Chemistry at the former Mount Saint Scholastica College, in Atchison, where he served as the Dean of Academic Affairs.
According to the press release, he was also instrumental in the 1971 merger between the college, and Saint Benedict's College, which created today's Benedictine College.
He retired in 1989.
Barbara Baumgartner is credited for her teaching career of more than 30-years, which included time at the Mount Academy, Mount Saint Scholastica College, and Benedictine College. She also served as Director of the English Language Support Program, Director of the Center for General Sudies.
She retired in 1991.
Tuesday's Opening Academic Convocation ceremony is free and open to the public.
