(KNZA)--The Brown County Sheriff is alerting residents of an IRS scam being reported locally.
Sheriff John Merchant says the sheriff's department has received several complaints from county residents saying they have been receiving phone calls from individuals stating they are from the IRS. He said one resident said their caller ID even identified the call as coming from the IRS.
Merchant said the callers are telling residents they owe delinquent income taxes. They are then instructed to provide bank account information to take care of the debt or a sheriff's deputy will arrive at their residence to arrest them.
Merchant says this is a scam. He says residents should never rely on their caller ID to inform them of who is calling because there are many ways that scammers can alter the identity of their call.
Merchant reminds residents to never provide any personal or bank account information to an unsolicited caller.
