(KNZA)--The Doniphan County Commission has approved for publication a proposed 2017 budget of $11.2 million after including additional funding for the county Health Department.
Representatives of the Health Department and Health Department Advisory Board met with the Commission this week to request a funding increase, beginning in 2017.
Currently, the health department receives $40,000 from the county. Director Sheryl Pierce requested an increase to just over $124,000. Pierce said the increase will help sustain the future of the Health Department and services provided mainly to children and elderly in the county.
Even though the proposed budget keeps the tax levy at the same rate, the county will collect an additional $400,000 in local taxes due to a $8.5 million increase in the county's assessed valuation.
The Commission will consider adoption of the budget following a public hearing during a special session the evening of August 29th at 6:00 in the Commissioner’s room at the Doniphan County courthouse.
