TECUMSEH, Neb. (AP) - A former worker at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution says he was able to protect himself from an inmate who allegedly charged at him during a prison riot last year.
The Lincoln Journal Star reports that a Johnson County jury heard Cpl. Joseph Hatzenbuehler testify Monday and watched video of the deadly riot.
The video was the first public glimpse into the yard and the inmate-on-prison worker assaults that sparked the destructive riot May 10, 2015.
Inmate Roger Weikle is accused of running at Hatzenbuehler and trying to stomp on his head while he fought another inmate on the ground. Weikle didn't appear in court for his trial Monday.
Weikle's attorney, Todd Lancaster of the Nebraska Commission on Public Advocacy, told the jury to watch for details that have changed over time and inconsistent stories.
