(KNZA)--The former Brown County Jail could have a new owner Friday.
The facility will be auctioned off at 10:00 by Sheriff John Merchant on the 1st floor of the county courthouse.
The jail is to be sold to the highest bidder. There is no minimum bid. The building is appraised at around $64,000.
Under criteria established by the County Commission, the Commission has the right to reject any and all bids.
Merchant took more than a dozen interested people on a tour of the facility Monday.
The Commission also spoke by phone at their meeting Monday with a California resident interested in the facility, who says he plans to have a representative at the auction to bid for him.
The Commission voted in June to put the building up for public auction.
The old jail has been vacant since 2010 when the new 41-bed jail, located directly across the street, was opened.
Voters in November 2008 approved a one-half cent countywide retailers sales tax to fund its construction.
