(KNZA)--Fees collected through the required registration of Brown County sex offenders will be used to benefit local students.
“I’m very pleased to announce the Brown County Sheriff is going to be able to offer two $1,000 scholarships for high school students beginning in the spring of 2017,” said Brown County Sheriff John Merchant.
“I spoke with our KBI offender registry person down in Topeka and requested that we be able to use some of the funds we collect from our offenders toward the scholarship program,” Merchant explained. “They agreed that was acceptable. That’s how we’re going to be able to fund the program.”
Merchant says Brown County currently has over 60 offenders who are required to pay $20 each time they register, which must be done four times each year. Those fees equal more than $5,000.
The funds can not be used for operations of the Sheriff's Office, meaning they must be utilized, with approval, for community-based initiatives.
