(KNZA)--The former Hiawatha Chamber of Commerce treasurer convicted of embezzling funds from the organization has been ordered to pay more than $8,000 in restitution.
Brown County Attorney Kevin Hill says that came after a more than two hour hearing Monday for 42-year-old Beth Makita.
Makita was given a suspended 16-month prison sentence last month on charges of felony criminal use of a financial card and felony theft. She was placed on one-year supervised probation and ordered to pay restitution.
Hill says Makita disputed over $4,000 of the nearly $8,500 requested by the Chamber. After hearing a lot of evidence, he says District Judge Jim Patton ordered Makita to pay $8,372 in restitution.
She pleaded no contest in April to the charges. As part of a plea agreement, a charge of identity fraud was dismissed.
Makita was charged with the theft of funds between August 2014 and April 2015 while serving as Chamber treasurer.
She was arrested last November following an investigation by the Hiawatha Police Department.
