(KNZA)--The Hiawatha City Commission has adopted a 2017 city budget of about $6.5 million that contains a nearly 1.6 mill property tax levy increase.
The budget as approved Monday evening calls for the city to collect nearly $1.2 million in property tax revenue.
Overall, Mayor Steffen Shamburg says he feels its a good budget. He noted it does include a mill levy increase for recreation, just to hold things steady.
During the public hearing on the budget, a local resident asked how the city plans to address street issues.
Public Works Director Dave Grimm says the city’s streets were evaluated several years ago from worst to best. He said plans are to do one street this year, Mohave, and a couple next year.
Grimm says he plans to hold a work session this fall with the Commission to discuss a plan he’s put together to fix the city’s streets, alley’s and downtown parking
