Atchison Man Sentenced to Prison

(KAIR)--The maximum sentence.

That was handed down from Atchison County District Court Monday to an Atchison man who faced several charges.

45-year-old Steven Bowen was sentenced more than three years in prison on charges of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, felon in possession of a firearm and fleeing and eluding officers.

Bowen pleaded guilty to the charges in June.

He stated in court that he's battling a serious drug problem and had relapsed when he committed his crimes. Bowen asked for the minimum sentence as he was ready to face his demons and get clean.

However, the plea was denied and instead drug treatment while incarcerated was recommended.

The charges stem from Bowen’s April 17th arrest when he eluded an Atchison Sheriff Deputy who attempted to stop him for a traffic infraction.

Bowen managed to escape from the deputy, but his vehicle was later discovered abandoned in the area of 318th and Pratt Roads. At the same time, investigators say they discovered a suitcase full of drugs, drug paraphernalia and a firearm in a nearby ditch.

Bowen was found and taken into custody.

At the time of Bowen’s arrest, he was on probation from previous drug-related crimes.
