(KLZA)-- Sheriff Don Pounds and Jail Administrator Mike Dougherty met with Richardson County Commissioners Tuesday to discuss two new programs they would like to incorporate into the Sheriff’s Department.
Sheriff Pounds said they have been reviewing with other area law enforcement agencies a Managed Healthcare program for inmates. Sheriff Pounds explained a nurse would come to the jail twice per week to check on inmates. In addition, there are three doctors on-call 24-hours per day. The doctors can also view the inmates via video conferencing.
Pounds says the $32,724 annual cost for the service would be a savings to the County. He says other agencies are happy with the cost savings they have realized for healthcare under the program.
Once the new jail is opened, the number of prisoners housed will increase in Richardson County.
The Board asked Pounds to have a contract proposal sent from the company for review.
The other program discussed is Information Technology Incorporated which would replace the Sleuth system now used.
This is a records management system, and it is required the Department have a system in place. Sheriff Pounds said while improvements have been made recently, the current system is less than adequate. Records of cases that are more than five months old are not in the computer system and must be searched for when needed.
Commissioners asked the Sheriff to get a few more details. If a decision is made by July 21st on the change, the County receives a 20% savings on the system.
The initial cost to use the system is $12,764. That includes training for a staff member. There is also a monthly fee of $896.
