(Missouri Net)-- A Missouri lawmaker thinks pregnant women taking drugs should be charged with child abuse.
Nixa Representative Jered Taylor wants to make it a crime if a pregnant woman is taking illegal drugs or prescription drugs without a prescription. He’s offering a bill that could charge a woman with a class A or B misdemeanor or a class D felony, depending on the harm caused to the baby.
Taylor says in southwest Missouri, ten times the number of babies have been born with drug dependency compared to a decade ago. Under his bill, a woman could choose to receive drug treatment instead of being charged with abuse. Taylor thinks funding would need to be increased to help those who receive drug treatment.
