KS Leaders Come To LV; Sign Gitmo Opposition Letter
12/12/2015

U.S. Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins

(KAIR)--Sending a letter to the White House.

That's the next step in the plan formulated by two members of the Kansas Delegation, as outlined during a Town Hall meeting in Leavenworth.

At issue is the proposed closure of the Guantanamo Bay detainment center, meaning detainees would instead be housed at correctional facilities on the mainland.

Included on the list of possible locations is Fort Leavenworth, and that's what sparked the visit, and meeting, held Friday morning by 2nd District Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins and her fellow Republican, Congressman Mike Pompeo of the 4th District.

WIBW-AM reports Jenkins, during the gathering, encouraged members of the community to place their signatures on the letter already signed by the two Congressional Representatives, with Jenkins telling the crowd other signers include all statewide elected officials, except the Attorney General, as well as the Leavenworth City Council, the mayors of both Leavenworth and Lansing, and the Leavenworth County Commission.

Jenkins also asked for personal stories from Leavenworth residents regarding the potential detainee relocation. Those same residents could later be contacted by Jenkins' office to provide legal challenges to the proposed transfers should litigation be needed.
